Based in New York City, Monk's Trunk sells high quality, gently used children's clothing (sizes 0 to 8), as well as books and toys. Got things you want to sell? We pay in cash, up to 40% for clothing and up to 60% for toys/gear after an item sells. Or, for those who don't want to wait, we pay 25% for items we buy outright. Details here.

Monk's Trunk is changing hands and planning for reopening..
New management, folks, is grateful to the store's former owner and originator, and to the wonderful customers for the inspiration to help keep this great shop going. We are seeking a new location, and resuming planning in December!
Stay tuned to the blog and our facebook page for updates.. We have an email list as well, and you can be added in a flash if you'd like, just put in a word.
Merry winter, hope to see you all again soon.
Andrea Chaskin (the woman behind the counter during the final month, to be so inspired.)
That's right: This upcoming weekend will be the last one for Monk's Trunk at this location. Come on down for some HUGE discounts on kiddie things. We've got overstock books at up to 90% off their list price, toys, Gymboree overstock leggings for $3-5, mittens, snow boots and lots of fall/winter clothing.
Come and do your Christmas shopping early!
If you are a consignor and have money to collect, pleas come this weekend. Otherwise, email me at monkstrunk (at) gmail to make an appointment to come by off-hours.
With luck, this won't be the end of Monk's Trunk. A new owners plans to take over the store and reopen in the spring. Details will be posted as soon as humanly possible.
Thanks for your support for these three years! It's been incredibly rewarding getting to know you all and see your little nippers grow! love, carrie
Down coats tend to sell quickly in the fall, so even though winter weather hasn't hit yet, you may want to come on down to snag one. Here are a few things we've got for boys.
Columbia snowsuit, 18 to 24 months, $23
Ralph Lauren navy down coat, 2T, $30
Ralph Lauren brown coat. (We also have an identical one, same size, in olive.) $35
Kule navy parka, $27
Mini-Boden, 4T, $30
Monk's Trunk will be closing at the end of October 2013. As part of the wind-down we are reducing store hours to three days per week:
Friday, Saturday, and Sunday from 10 to 6.
On the upside (for you), there will be reductions on books, toys, and clothing throughout the store. I'll say more about that later.
Fortunately, there is a decent chance that this will NOT mean the end of recycled children's closing in Prospect Lefferts Gardens. A couple of folks are seriously considering picking up the baton and setting up shop selling second-hand children's things in the winter. I will certainly keep everyone posted about that!
Need a perfect indoor shoe? And by "perfect" I mean one that can be worn outdoors as well as in. Skidders grip the ground and yet have super-flexible soles, making them ideal for toddlers and preschoolers. We have them in various sizes in black, navy, pink, and a few brown. Come and get 'em! Originally $20 at retail / now $7.50
You won't want to miss our annual sidewalk sale tomorrow, folks. Proceeds benefit Prospect Park Playgrounds. Come on down!
Monk's Trunk annual sidewalk sale will be held in one week, on Saturday, September 14th, from 10 am to 4 pm. You'll find loads of gently used infant and toddler clothes,
children's books, puzzles, toys, and baby gear at unbeatable prices.
Most clothing will run about $2-3. Be sure to come early for the best selection: this sale tends to be a bit of a zoo.
A followup sale -- where remaining items sell for $1 -- will be held Sunday, September 15th. (Apologies to our Jewish customers, as Saturday is Yom Kippur, but we have to hold our sale on the same date as our block party, a date we didn't choose.)
Profits from the sidewalk sale will benefit the Prospect Park playgrounds.
Is this black? Navy? In different lighting you could make an argument for either. It's an excellent condition and, though a size is not stated, we're estimating that this is about 18 to 24 months. Email monkstrunk (at) gmail if you'd like us to ship ($7.95 s/h)
So you buy your kid a large wardrobe at the start of season and, once you wash it all and get it in the drawers, find out that he's a size 8, not 7. Waaaaaaa.
Oh well, we now have practically a rack's worth of size 7 boys' Ralph Lauren in nearly new condition: long- and short-sleeved polo shirts, rugby shirts, a few hoodies, a couple of sweaters, and lots of pants and jeans. A few things were worn a few times but many were only washed. Prices average around $8.
We're putting out several infant snowsuits and buntings, by Petit Bateau, Gap, Ralph Lauren, and others. Come check 'em out!
Just put out two bins of deeply discounted spring/summer girls' things, including some super-cute dresses and rompers. Come on down!
We've been putting out fall -- and even winter -- things this week, for boys and girls in all sizes. Come check them out before the best stuff gets snapped up! Here area few pics.
Zutano dress, 3T, $17
Ralph Lauren jacket, 2T, $15

Huge discounts on summer toys and clothing going on now. Come by!
During the winter, my son wears a 4T pant. But in the summer, the size of his shorts and pants runs anywhere from 12 months up to 4T. Like a lot of kids, he has grown in height over the years but his waist? Not so much. Toddlers have proportionately large bellies and those bellies don't grow at the rate everything else does.
When long pants grow short, we wear them as capri-length pants, often rolling them up at the bottom. My son prefers them to shorts because his knees don't hurt as much when he falls, and they look GREAT. He gets compliments all the time on several pair of his "baby" pants, which he wears with knockoff Crocs. Of course, cut-offs are always an option as well.
The same applies to shorts he has outgrown; shorts are fit so long these days that the smaller sizes in many cases fit and look even better than the ones designed for kids his size.
for the delay folks, here's the deal: Monk's Trunk will soon be
re-opening in our old location (sigh), at 23 Hawthorne Street. When we closed a little over a
month ago, we had hopes to open nearby on Flatbush as a temporary "pop
up" store with below-market rent. But to make a long, tedious story
short, that didn't pan out. The store has grown to the extent that it
needs a normal commercial space -- one that doesn't
require customers to lug strollers full of babies up a flight of stairs
*or* take up my family's dining room with heat-treating equipment.
After a couple of months of soul-searching, however, I regret to report
that Elyssa and I are not the ones to do. We will only remain in this
location to sell items through the fall/winter season.
anyone like to run a children's consignment store? We would be thrilled
to hand off the business to someone interested in opening it in a
commercial space. If you are seriously interested and have the capital
to do it, please get in touch soon.
In the mean time, we will
be reopening Thursday, July 11th, with tons of bargain on summer things.
The hours will be irregular in the summer but our website and Facebook
will be kept up-to-date, and hours will be expended as the fall season
HOURS THIS WEEK
Thursday, July 11 - 10 to 6
Friday, July 12 - 10 to 4
Saturday - 10 to 6
Sunday - 10 to 6
Hours for next week will be posted shortly.
If you are a consignor and brought things in this spring, your
consignment period will automatically be extended for six weeks. You are
also welcome to come and pick up any unsold items that haven't expired;
as usual, we ask you to contact us a day in advance to let us know and
pull things for you.
We've moving! Don't worry, we're staying in the neighborhood and will remain close to Flatbush. We have always intended on staying in our current location temporarily and are excited about the move.
We don't have the lease signed yet, so we can't say anything more at the moment out of fear of jinxing it. But we'll be closing the shop starting Tuesday, May 21. We're not sure of the reopen date yet but will be sure to keep you posted.
We'll be extending consignment times for everyone who currently has things on consignment this season. If you have any questions, call us any time during store hours.
